2015 08 05

MIAMI – Latin American airlines transported 91.5 million passengers in the first six months of this year, a 5.4 percent increase over the same period in 2014, the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association, known as ALTA, said Tuesday.

The Miami-based association said in a statement that the percentage increase represents an additional 4.7 million passengers.

Revenue passenger kilometers – RPKs – increased 5.9 percent and available seat kilometers, or ASKs, rose 4.2 percent, pushing the occupancy factor to 79.2 percent, half a percentage point over the January-June period last year.

ALTA said the number of passengers carried in June, 14.6 million, was 4.8 percent higher than the same month last year.

Cargo ton kilometers decreased 3.4 percent in June and 7.5 percent in the first half of the year, according to the ALTA, whose members account for more than 90 percent of air traffic in the region.

The ALTA figures are based on data from Austral, Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromar, AeroMexico, AeroMexico Connect, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Copa Airlines Colombia, GOL, InselAir, LATAM Airlines Group and Volaris.
