The number of routes operated from Glasgow Airport will be reduced from 23 to three, with five being transferred to Edinburgh. At least 300 jobs could be lost because of the move and it could means passenger numbers fall by 500,000.

The budget airline has blamed the “weaker Glasgow market” and the high Air Passenger Duty rates for the cutes.

David O’Brien, Ryanair's chief commercial officer, said: “Ryanair regrets these cuts in the weaker Glasgow market, where efforts to stimulate low fare demand are severely hampered by the continuing burden of APD.

"As a result, we will transfer our Glasgow International based aircraft to Edinburgh in November." He also noted that Brexit was a threat to Scottish tourism and the airline industry.

In its winter 2018 schedule, Ryanair will only fly to Dublin, Krakow and Wroclaw from Glasgow. It will host 45 routes from Edinburgh including 11 new routes.

Ryanair opened a new base at Glasgow Airport in Autumn 2014, one of several new bases opened across Europe that year.
