I graduated from a Canadian Aviation College in May 1996. In the past ten years, I’ve been to the North West Territories of Canada, the Queen Charlotte Islands, the West Coast of Canada, the Republic of the Maldives, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Angola.

Presently, I work in Africa, in a country called Angola flying the DHC-6 Twin Otter. I live in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. I first arrived here 5am Friday morning Oct 28th 2002. I really didn’t know what to expect, I thought it might be something similar to other places I’ve been for holidays, like India or Sri Lanka. But none of these, or even all of them combined, could prepare me for the circus of absurdities and anarchy that awaited me in Angola. The dust, the unpaved roads, the shacks, the smell of garbage; people sitting around, a fat old lady slumped over a stall, an old man stretched out on a bench, little children running around naked in an open sewer, broken-down cars, gathering garbage, just an overall sense of desolation. Here I was, to live and work in this paradise.

I work for a Swiss company, contracted and then subcontracted to another airline. We mainly work for the minister of transport, flying only passengers. We spend one week at a time based in the “bush” towns, flying to the outlying villages. In the towns, the conditions are not the best, usually no running water and the food is perfect if you want a good case of diarrhea.

Thanks, in part to my hours on the Twin Otter, I’ve had the experience of working in many parts of the world. If I do ever decide to be an airline pilot, or move onto another aircraft, I will look back on my past experiences, and not only will be an overall better pilot, but I will appreciate the adventures I’ve had along the way.
